UMATILLA, Ore. – Every autumn, flocks of ducks descend upon the ponds along the Columbia River at the McNary Wildlife Nature Area, about one mile downstream of McNary Lock and Dam on the Oregon shoreline. As winter approaches, more ducks and other wildlife can be seen throughout the nature area.
Over Thanksgiving weekend, park rangers from the McNary Natural Resources Management Office invite visitors to join them on a nature hike. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors can walk off some of Thursday’s traditional, big meal calories and learn a little about the wildlife found near McNary Dam.
Hikers should meet at 10 a.m. in the Pacific Salmon Visitor Information Center. Visitors should wear sturdy walking shoes, dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring binoculars, cameras and a portable water bottle.
The trail relatively flat, however participants should be prepared to travel over uneven surfaces. Directions: travel 1 mile east of Umatilla, Ore., on Highway 730, turn north onto McNary Dam Road, follow the road to the visitor center parking lot; the visitor center is located at Columbia River Mile 292, on the south riverbank. The hike offers an opportunity to learn about migrating water fowl, and other seasonal and year-round wildlife residents along the Columbia River.
